janet jackson superbowl 2004

Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction, Superbowl 2004

For those of you who forgot, let me bring back a pleasant, yet unusually controversial incident. Janet Jackson. “Wardrobe malfunction.” Starry nipples. Need I say more?

Yes, we’re talking about the 2004 Superbowl–specifically when Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s performance got a little too up close and personal. Because of the “accident,” CBS got fined by the FCC big time.

The whole media outrage about this incident was kind of stupid to begin with, yet no one seems to care about the far worse things we witness on daytime television–for starters, how about all the gratuitous sex seen on daytime soap operas?

The victory is a win-win. Good for Janet, whether it really was an accident or not, she really did feel bad afterwards (bad enough to make a public nationally aired apology). And good for CBS (I guess), since they got away from a lawsuit over $500,000. Not like they can’t afford to pay it or anything, but it wasn’t exactly the network’s fault that this happened. Besides, incidents like these make for awesomely bad pop culture that we can all look back upon with fond, warm and fuzzy nostalgia.

Although this was a shocker for many, one of the biggest jaw-droppers for me in recent years was witnessing Kanye West’s famous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” line on national television–during a telethon. Let’s give it up for the first amendment…and JJ’s nipples!
