As Election Nears, Obama Draws Unlikely Supporters

Submitted by Maya on October 26, 2008 – 7:08 pmOne Comment

As the election nears, more and more Republicans and conservatives are embracing Obama and announcing their endorsements. I’m beginning to lose track of all the unlikely support Obama has been receiving lately, so of course, I thought I’d make a list. It just goes to show that Obama, although deemed  a “radical” and “leftist,” can appeal to voters across the political spectrum. People from all walks of life have adapted and accepted his message of hope and change:

Scott McClellan: Former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan, whose book ”What Happened?” delivered a harsh critique of the current White House administration, has endorsed Barack Obama for president. The news emerged on the CNN’s new show “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News.” “From the very beginning I’ve said I’m going to support the candidate who has the best chance of changing the way Washington works and getting things done. I will be voting for Barack Obama,” said McClellan.

Charles Barkley: Republican-turned-Independent and former NBA star Charles Barkley announced his endorsement on CNN, decrying that Republicans and Democrats alike make him sick, and that he admires the fact that Obama is a strong black role model.

Chicago Tribune: A newspaper with a conservative voice, you might remember its days of Clinton-bashing and Bush-loving content. This is the first time in its history that the Chicago Tribune has endorsed a democratic candidate.

Colin Powell: Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican who worked under the Reagan and Bush administration, announced Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he will be voting for Obama, mainly for his “ability to inspire” and the “inclusive nature of his campaign.” He also mentioned that he was uncomfortable with where he saw the Republican party going, and expressed that Obama “displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge.”

The Anchorage Daily News: A surefire slap in the face to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the newspaper endorsed Obama on Oct. 25, 2008. Alaska, a heavy Republican state, took a left turn and left Palin in the dark, despite keeping their endorsement for Obama clean and respect for Palin obvious.

William Weld: Former Republican Massachusetts Governor William Weld, who has never endorsed a Democrat before, endorsed Obama. He claimed that during the last six weeks or so, it became “close to a no-brainer.”
