Obama Up in 6 out of 8 Critical States, But Will History Repeat Itself?

Submitted by Maya on November 3, 2008 – 1:46 amNo Comment

According to the polls (as of last Wednesday), Obama is up in six out of the eight swing states, four which are considered Republican states. This is, of course, very reassuring, but many of us remain unconvinced, and at the least, a little skeptical. And rightfully so. After all, these numbers are based on polls, and we all know there are a lot of things to consider when looking at rapidly-changing numbers in this election. There is always a margin of error, which is usually slight, but the fact that a black man has already made it this far combined with our less-than-perfect-vote-counting history leaves almost anything possible at this point.

Although many of us want to believe that this could actually happen, there is always that voice in our heads: Is America really ready for a black president? Is Obama really going to win when we see idiots on TV who still think he is an “Arab”? Are votes really going to be counted correctly and fairly? Will some insane clan member try to assassinate him? Okay, that last one was mostly my paranoia, but these thoughts just seem to increase as we get closer and closer to judgment Armageddon election day.

Let’s face it: We have every reason to be skeptical, cynical and scared. The Kerry/Bush election was extremely close. The Gore/Bush election was so shady it had countries notorious for corruption cackling at us. We’ve got all those undecided voters, who Republicans are trying really hard to grab. We’ve got the misconception that Joe the Plumber will not benefit from Obama’s tax plan when in fact, he will. We’ve got Sarah Palin’s annoying voice successfully convincing much of middle America that killing moose makes her qualified to run the country. We’re so close, yet it could be so far. And that thought, let me reiterate, is absolutely terrifying.

We haven’t had a democratic president since Clinton, and even though there is a chance Obama could win by one of the largest margins in a really long time, the fact still remains—it’s only a chance.

Still, I believe Obama will be our president. And I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do if he’s not, but let’s just say dual citizenship (India could still be a possibility) will probably be looking pretty enticing. And honestly, I didn’t even think about that until now.

Will the third time be the charm we’ve all been praying for? All I know is when the news breaks out, I’ll probably be in a dark corner with some prayer beads and my eyes closed. It’s not my fault that the fact that I don’t even know how reliable my vote will be come election day is contributing to my senility. At this point, prayer is the only thing I can depend on, and prayers don’t even get answered 100% of the time. But I’ve had a pretty good track record, so I’m taking my chances.

Jeb Bushes, Katherine Harrises, jinxes, backlashes, witches, voting riggers, voodoo priests and Murphy’s law, be warned. I’ve got my prayer beads, suckas!
